How to Buy a Stability Ball

A stability ball is a useful tool for stretching and strength training. The use of a stability ball can improve your core strength, flexibility, balance and coordination--all of which can improve your game. Buying the correct size stability ball is crucial to the effectiveness of the equipment.

How to Buy a Stability Ball

Go shopping. Visit a sporting goods store. Some stores like Target and Wal-Mart also sell stability balls in their fitness department.

Choose your size. Find the correct ball size based on your height. People less than 4 feet, 8 inches tall should try a 45 centimeter ball. People between 4 feet, 8-inches and 5 feet, 4 inches tall should try a 55 cm ball. People between 5 feet, 4 inches and 6 feet tall should try a 65 cm ball. Anyone taller than 6 feet probably would do best with a 75 cm ball.

Pump it up. Ask if you can inflate the ball in the store to check that you have the correct size. Most stability balls come with a pump. Once it is inflated, measure the ball to make sure it is exactly the size in centimeters that it is supposed to be. Some balls come with a measuring tape, but you should bring one to the store just in case. Let air out of the ball if it is too big, or put more air in if it is too small.

Try it out. Sit on the ball next to a mirror, with your body turned sideways. Bend your knees so they are above your ankles. Look in the mirror. Your hips should be at the same height as your knees. If not, the ball is not the correct size for you. Ask to try a different size stability ball until you find one that will align your hips and knees when you are sitting up straight on the ball.
