How to Organize Golf Clubs

Every golfer has their own system for where they keep their clubs, but organizing your golf bag is key to keeping pace during a round.

While some bags have individual slots for each club, others have pockets into which groups of clubs may be stored. In either situation, knowing which clubs are where will make club selection faster.

The Process

    1. If you are re-organizing an existing bag, clear the bag of all additional equipment, such as ball retrievers, balls, tees, etc. This would also be a good time to clean your bag of debris and dirt. If you are using a new bag, skip this step.

    1. Place your woods at the top (the area closest to the strap) of the bag. If the bag has individual slots, the most logical way to place the clubs is in descending order from the driver, left to right.

    2. If there is just one pocket at the top, insert of all your woods into this pocket. Standard-sized ball retrievers often are kept with woods.

    1. Place your 3-4 longest irons in the slots or pockets below and to the left of the top of the bag. For example, place your 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons in this spot.

    1. Place your 3-4 short irons in the slots or pockets below and to the right of the bag. For example, place your 6, 7, 8 and 9 irons in this spot.

    1. Place your wedges and putter in the bottom slots or pocket of the bag.

    2. Many golfers place the putter in the very bottom slot or at the bottom of the pocket for easy access. In some cases, a device may be hooked on to the bag so that the putter is hanging outside of the bottom part of the bag during play.

    1. Once your clubs are organized, other equipment may be stored in the pockets. The most easily accessible pocket is the one below where the wedges and irons are stored, and balls should be placed in this pocket.

    1. Side pockets may be used for storing additional equipment and supplies, including collapsible ball retrievers, tees, markers, rain gear, sunscreen and insect repellent. In addition, small bags for tees, wire brushes, watches or other accessories may be clipped to the outside of the bag.
