Golf is a sport of accessories. Although golf cleats, towels, hats and carts are all optional, to actually play the game, every golfer needs several items. All of the equipment a golfer needs can be bought brand new for hundreds or thousands of dollars, or used for less than $100.

Driver And Woods

Drivers and woods are used to hit the golf ball a far distance. The head of the driver is usually made of titanium. Traditionally, the head of a wood was made from wood, normally persimmon, but in more recent years has changed to titanium. A driver can also be called a 1-wood, with people also generally carrying 3-woods and 5-woods. The lower the driver number, the farther a golfer should be able to hit the ball. Off the tee, golfers usually use a driver, especially for a longer hole. If the golfer still has a long shot once on the fairway, he or she will use a wood. Drivers can cost less than $50 but can also cost as much as $1,000.

Irons

For shorter shots, golfers us irons. Irons historically are made from iron, but some are now made with steel. While irons do not have the same distance potential as a driver or wood, they are more accurate. Irons range from a 1-iron to a 9-iron while some golfers also carry an assortment of wedges like pitching wedges or sand wedges. The lower numbered irons hit the ball farther, have a closed club face, or the angle of the club face is more vertical. Higher-numbered irons, and wedges have open club faces, which allows the ball to be lofted higher in the air. The irons can be used to negotiate around and through different hazards. A set of irons can cost anywhere from less than $50 to more than $1,000.

Putter

A putter is used to hit the golf ball when in close proximity to the hole, generally on the green. A putter is the club most necessary for the game of golf, because putting depends on such great accuracy. Putters vary in design, some with longer shafts, different shaped club grips and different shaped shafts, all meant to increase accuracy and smoothness in the shot. Putters can cost anywhere from less than $50 to more than $500.

Bag

Golfers need a bag to carry their clubs, golf balls and tees. Many types of bags exist. Golf Cart bags are specifically designed to sit well on a golf cart. A golf staff bag is the type of bag most often used by professionals. These bags are comfortable for a caddy to carry. Golf stand bags can be used if no cart or caddy is around to hold the clubs. The bag has two legs that open when the bag is set on the ground. Golf travel bags also exist where the clubs can be covered and protected, then checked on an airplane. All golf bags have pockets for balls and tees. Some have drink holders. Some have an open hole for all club placement, and others have individual sections for each club. Bags can cost anywhere from less than $50 to more than $250.

Golf Balls

Golf balls are available for men and women. Golf balls have a plastic exterior and a rubber core. Women's golf balls are designed to be hit farther with less force from a swing. Golf balls are designed with different features. Some are built to be hit further, with thinner exteriors. Others are meant to have more spin to better control the ball. The dimples on the ball help to keep the ball on a straight path. A set of 12 balls can cost between $10 and $50.
